Hitler fought in the fist world war but was injured and could not continue. After the war, Hitler attended a German Workers' party, an anti-Semitic, nationalist group as a spy for the German Army and soon found out he agreed with some of the nationalist ideas. He quickly rose through the ranks and by 1921, was the leader of the re-named National Socialist German Workers Part (Nazi). By 1930, the Nazis were polling around 6.5 million votes. In the presidential elections of 1932, Hitler came second. On 30 January 1933, President Hindenburg was forced to appoint Hitler as Chancellor, given his popular support. After Hindenburg's death in 1934 Hitler was in control. Looked upon as the man responsible for WWII when he invaded Poland on September 1939. By 1941, Germany had conquered most of Western Europe and started heading east towards Russia, despite the alliance. The German army found themselves in the Russian winter without an adequate supply line. In 1943, they started their long retreat and the same time the allies were advancing on Germany from the west. Benito Mussolini
Born: July 29, 1883 Died: April 28, 1945 Benito Mussolini was the Dictator of Italy during WWII. Benito Mussolini fought during the first world war but was angered at how easy his government surrendered. He believed in making Italy strong again as it once was during the Roman Empire and by 1925, had made himself dictator of Italy. In 1935, determined to show the strength of his regime, Benito Mussolini invaded Ethiopia. Ethiopia was no match for Italy's modern tanks and airplanes and the capital was soon captured. Hitler was soon impressed by his success and by 1939 the two countries had signed a military alliance known as the "Pact of Steel". Many Italians believed the pact with Germany would help them recover from past battles, but Germany's declaration of war with Britain and France forced Italy into the War and exposed weakness in its military. Allied forces soon took control of southern Italy and with pressure mounting, Mussolini was forced to resign and arrested. He was then rescued by German commandos and fled to northern Italy. On June 4, 1944, Rome was liberated by Allied forces, who marched on to take control of Italy. Mussolini tried to escape to Switzerland but was captured on April 27, 1945. He was executed the following day, on April 28, 1945. |
